I think it stands for 'general certificate of secondary education', and is the examination schoolchildren in the UK take at age 16.
I'm wondering how Mark's language students got on ...?

Thank you very much!! It's been such a surreal day actually - rang up Henry Box to confirm and the teacher remembered me and asked how I'd got on in China. Very odd conversation!
